JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Enables Lasting Growth at ABRIKA PHARMACEUTICALS
Company Overview
Abrika
Pharmaceuticals is a specialty generic
pharmaceutical company engaged in the formulation
and commercialization of both controlled release
("CR") and immediate release ("IR") products
utilizing proprietary drug delivery technologies. By
applying their technologies to selected generic
prescription pharmaceuticals, Abrika seeks to
duplicate the release characteristics of these drugs
in order to manufacture and market versions that can
be substituted for branded products.
Abrika intends to develop and use their drug
delivery technologies to commercialize a portfolio
of generic pharmaceutical products. Abrika’s key
customers include all major drug wholesalers as well
as large pharmacy chains and groceries with pharmacy
services.
Abrika has been in operation since May 2002 under
the direction of Alan Cohen, founder and retired CEO
and Chairman of Andrx Corporation.
Challenges Faced
Abrika needed to be live on an integrated Enterprise
Resource Planning (ERP) system in time for sales of
products for which they were quickly getting
approval. They were currently on a small software
package for financials and had no system for
manufacturing or distribution. The key was to
purchase a full function system that would grow as
the company grew in volume and revenue size. The
system had to handle all facets of the business,
including financials, distribution and
manufacturing.
The Solution
Familiar with JD Edwards’s large footprint in the
pharmaceutical industry, Abrika had no trouble
selecting
JD Edwards
EnterpriseOne to be its new Enterprise
Resource Planning (ERP) system. Abrika selected
Formscape as well for their forms printing needs.
CD
Group, Inc. sold the software and proved to be a
great selection as well. According to Stella Laurella, Controller at Abrika, “I didn’t realize
that CD Group had so much to offer. They even helped
us with our hardware decisions and EDI needs.” The
contract was signed in September’ 03 and Abrika
needed to be live by February ’04. Abrika did not
have many resources to apply to this implementation,
so CD Group took the lead and kept Stella informed.
According to Stella, “CD Group understood our
requirements and implemented accordingly. The client
manager, Lisa Redmon, was always available and
stayed on top of everything and coordinated all the
tasks. She created a workable plan, given our
constraints.” CD Group’s technology team provided
and continues to provide all of the CNC support
until Abrika can justify bringing this in house.
Stella comments “they are always there when we need
them.”!
Benefits Realized
Abrika benefited right away from
an integrated system. They gained more control over
the financials, benefited from best practice
purchase order processes which included approval
routing, and overall improved internal controls. One
month after go live, Abrika was configuring sales
orders to match the contract arrangements with each
individual customer. By implementing Formscape as
well, Abrika was able to produce a professional
looking invoice, key to keeping up with their
competition.
Abrika attributes customer satisfaction in part to
the implementation of this ERP system. Likewise,
Abrika has been able to keep its headcount down due
the implementation of this system. According to
Stella, “had we not implemented this system, we
would have had to hire people to keep up with all of
the tasks.”
The CEO of Abrika routinely includes JD Edwards in
his presentation to customers and prospects. By
selecting JD Edwards, Abrika is poised for the
future. Had they chosen a mid-tier solution, they
would be looking at migrating in the future. Now,
they don’t have to.
Overall, through its partnership with CD Group,
Abrika Pharmaceuticals is poised to grow according
to projections and has the ERP backbone ready to
enable this growth. Stella noted that “overall this
has been a very good experience. We feel fortunate
to have partnered with CD Group.”
