Company Overview

Point Blank Body Armor Inc., established in 1973, is a subsidiary of Point Blank Solutions, Inc. (PBSI), a company that employs over 1,000 people globally. As the product development arm of Point Blank, PBSI operates the most comprehensive and state-of-the-art ballistic research laboratory and Technology and Testing Center which is located in the company's 107,000 square foot corporate headquarters in Pompano Beach, Florida. This facility is one of two manufacturing sites in Florida including Deerfield Beach (61,000 sq. ft.).

Challenges Faced

Point Blank Body Armor was on AMAS for financials and MAS 200 for Sales Orders, Purchasing, and Inventory, and was not meeting the needs of the company.

The objectives for a new system were to:

• Improve the consistency and quality of financial information through a common financial software platform and standard business best practice processes.
• Improve back office efficiency by reducing the number of manual steps and the extensive use of spreadsheets.
• Improve the presentation and analysis of financial reporting without the heavy use of a programmer.
• Install a solution foundation that has the capabilities and scalability to expand as the business expands.

The Solution

Oracle® Accelerators were leveraged at Point Blank to help setup the initial Conference Room Pilot (CRP) in five weeks. A two-week RICE workshop was held to review data conversions and interfaces to a third-party apparel industry vertical manufacturing solution. The Oracle modules implemented at this client were GL, AP, AR, PO, FA and a limited inventory for Purchasing and AR.

Two functional consultants performed Discovery and Setup, Accelerator setup and post setup actions to achieve a fully functional system within the first five weeks of the project. Gap analysis was performed during the initial CRP to validate that the system was setup properly and to provide functional proof of concept.

Based on the gap analysis, the system was reconfigured with identified changes to achieve desired functionality. A second Oracle instance was created for the second CRP and follow-on training. Within the first eight weeks of the project both CRP's were completed. Final configuration was signed off by the client and the conversions were validated. The production instance and final configuration was completed sixteen weeks from the start of the project.

At Go-Live, the client decided to perform a month-long parallel for manufacturing and financial systems, where they ran both systems concurrently. At the end of the first month of parallel operation, Oracle balanced to the legacy system and final GL balances were migrated from the legacy system to the Oracle production instance. From that point Oracle ran as a stand-alone financial system and is their system of record.

Benefits Realized

Immediately after going live, Point Blank Body Armor saved time in the Finance Department. Accounting was able to close the month quickly and to drill down to view payables and purchasing information from the General ledger for analysis. Additional time was saved by performing consolidation within the system using financial report functionality, rather than spending hours manipulating excel spread sheets.

Overall, through its selection of Oracle EBS, its partnership with CD Group, Point Blank Body Armor has approached best practice processes in the financial areas of the business and is prepared to take on the next requirements for growth.
